Internet Explorer Right-Click Open Window Failure

Since I'm on the topic of bugs, I solved another bug today. All of a sudden, the right click and "Open in New Window" feature of Internet Explorer (v6 sp1) started failing. The current window would just lock up and eventually time-out. I also found I couldn't launch Windows Update. Very annoying since I use this feature constantly.

Anyway, I fumbled around for a while. Lavasoft's Ad-aware v6 gave me a clean bill of health but I eventually decided to install and run an antivirus check. Yes, I admit I don't normally run antivirus software. I find it causes more trouble than it prevents and I've really never had much troubles with viruses. I'm very careful about what executables I run. Anyway, I installed and ran a copy of GriSoft's AVG and sure enough, I found three trojan download programs. They seemed to have been the culprit as the problem disappeared.

So now I'm keeping AVG installed but I still refuse to run it in resident shield mode. It's far too invasive. I'll run it on demand when things get suspicious or I think the hard drive bearings need a work out.

Gravatar Well, actually I had the same problem: the "Right-click --> Open in New Window" feature was failing in my computer. Hotmail messenger wouldn't open IE. So I spied the actions taken in the registry, searched for a failed action (for example a not-found result) and after a bit of analysis, found my solution. In the key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\LocalServer32
the default value should be
%programfiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

That solved ALL the problems described.
