Voice Over IP

Looks like Voice Over IP is building momentum and I'm starting to mull over whether it's time to try it out. In the US, Vonage looks great while here in the UK, Pipecall looks like a leading contender. However, there are other contenders and resources that should be researched  (CallUK, Jeff Pulver, SipPhone, VOIPtalk, Gradwell, Gossiptel). A good website with a UK forum is voip.org.uk (hosted by Gradwell).

To me the biggest attraction is cheap international calls. To call Malaysia, BT charges 42p per minute so we currently use OneTel which charges 8p. But with Pipecall, it drops to less than 2p! Looks promising but how well do they deliver and will it get through the firewall? Don't really have time to figure it out just yet.

Gravatar Just spent a few hours trying to get the free service from GossipTel working but I can't configure the soft phone X-Lite to work. Arggh!!

Even configured the firewall for SIP, STUN and RTP to no avail nor does it help sticking the computer in the DMZ.

Gravatar I got it working! These were the settings the X-Lite phone needed:

domain: sip.gossiptel.com
SIP Proxy: sip.gossiptel.com
Outbound Proxy: sipproxy.gossiptel.com
Use Outbound Proxy: always
Send Internal IP: Default
Register: Always

So if I have the phone running on my computer, you call me on 0870 9305078 from a regular phone, the call comes direct to my machine.

If you have a SIP based phone, you can reach me at 9305078@sip.gossiptel.com

Very Cool.

Gravatar And I should mention that I opened the following incoming ports on my firewall to get this to work:

SIP:5060..5061 (TCP/UDP)
STUN:3478 (TCP/UDP)
RTP:8000..8020 (UDP)
