Home Infrastructure Upgrade

I've been away on holiday and things have been quiet on the computing front. However, last week, I've been rejigging my home infrastructure.

I've trashed my old server and installed Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. I've also doubled my mirrored storage to two 80Gb disks. Instead of using the Promise RAID controller on my motherboard, I'm using the RAID abilities of Windows Server. The server is primarily for file sharing. I'll also use it as a web server and running SQL Server. I'm mulling over installing Uniform Server so I can experiment with Apache/PHP/MySQL Open Source projects but, really, I should find another box to run that stuff on.

I started upgrading to a domain controller but backed off when I realised I would have to run DNS and keep the server on all the time.

Meanwhile, I migrated over to my "new" PC (it's not that new anymore). Definitely enjoying the speed increase.

I've also changed ADSL providers. I dumped my business package with BT - a legacy from working at Microsoft - to a consumer package from Plus Net. I was paying way too much with BT for a 512Mbps connection with a static IP. I now have a 1 Mbps connection, still get a static IP and I pay much less. However, I gotta admit the BT connection was faultless while I've been having connection problems with Plus Net. It better be temporary (as they claim). If the connection iregularities clear up, then I would highly recommend them as an ADSL provider. Their portal website is superb and the migration was very smooth.

If you want to move too, click on this link and I get a kick back :-)
