Windows XP Won't Burn CD's

I've been banging my head against this problem for a while. I have an NEC 2500a DVD-Writer. Nero 6 will burn a CD on it without any problem. It works. Windows XP recognises it as a DVD-Writer since it displays a recording tab in the drive properties windows. I have recording enabled. The device manager reports that everything is ok with the device. The "IMAPI CD Burning Service" is started and running on my machine.

But do you think Windows XP will let me burn a CD? Nope. Nadda. Not a chance.

If try to burn some files to a CD-R, I just get a beep when I choose "write files". The CD Burning Wizard doesn't even launch. It's a very annoying beep. You think the developer could have come up with something better than "beep"? In the same vein, Windows Media Player doesn't even bother beeping; it just does nothing when I try to burn a CD. Grrrrr.

No, KB Article Q324129 or Q314096 doesn't help either. And I don't need ASPI drivers. Reinstalling SP2 didn't help. NEC support has responded with just "It's a WinXP problem". Yeah, thanks for that.

Gravatar Our IT guys changed my anti virus software, and all of a sudden I've got the same problem. I used to have Symantec, but now I've got McAfee. Problem is they prefer to use Nero, don't know what their doing so haven't/can't put it right. They've also denied me access to the antivirus control panel to fiddle with settings.

Gravatar Im dealing with this right now. Windows recognizes the drive as a recordable device... but does NOT see ANY blank media I put in it.

I friggin' hate Windows. This is why I have been with Mac for over 4 years now.

Windows sucks harder and harder every day.

Gravatar Your drives are first and formost a DVD DRIVE....remember that.

The built in burn drivers from Roxio that XP uses do not work with a dvd drive...even if it's a combo unit afaik.

you will need to use DVD/CD capable burning software.....

enjoy!

Gravatar I have a dell 3 yrs old with floppy, cd rom, cd burner. rom and burner play music. burner doesn't burn. I have used(tried to) windows, sonic record and nero.So I assumed bad burner. Bought a pioneer dvd/cd double layer external usb burner with nero7 software packaged with it. Doing the same thing. Acts like it is burning but encounters problem with end writing. Sometimes when I go back into my computer all drives are gone until I reboot. Is there any hope?
Sick of Dell. They said windows problem windows says dell problem.

Gravatar Hey Guys,

If you want to do productive things and not waste time fixing random things that break in Windows, get a Mac. My Mac (at home) never has problems. If you have to use a PC, like I do at work, this is how I fixed it:

Gravatar Buy a MAC???? Are you kidding me? If you are an idiot and cannot learn how to use a PC yes, buy a Mac that is slower and will cost you twice as much.

I support Linux, Windows and Apple....Apple has to be the worst out of the three. It's sad because they should have their O/S down pat since it's all propiertary hardware.

Stupid apple fanboi's, I love how they defended the powerpc processor (it does teraflops!) oh...wait, yea, now we admit it sucks ass and we are using Intel....

Gravatar I have a client PC on a local domain. I'm the administrator. The domain administrator can write CD's on the client PC, but a domain user account cannot. I can manually start the IMAPI service under the domain administrator account, but not under the domain user account. The error is 5, access deined. Any ideas?
