The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

If you've ever enjoyed role-playing games (RPG), then you really should get a copy of Oblivion.

I like to try out games that generate buzz on the 'net for setting new standards in their respect genre - like Far Cry, Rome Total War, Warcraft III and Age of Empires. Oblivion has been getting raves for setting a new highpoint in RPG gaming.

I used to play RPG's well over a decade ago but lost interest in them. I did try Dungeon Siege when it first came out. The graphics were very nice but halfway through the game, I got bored of the gameplay. Too repetitive.

The first time I tried Oblivion, I was a little disappointed. The game play of this style of game really hasn't changed a whole lot in twenty odd years. I had flash backs of King's Quest (first releaseed in 1984). Same stuff but the graphics are just a whole lot better.

I stuck it out and found that you do get sucked into the game quite well. The landscape is huge and there are plenty of quests to pursue. Non-player characters have interesting behaviours, lines and well animated mouths and expressions. The fighting system works well. The havoc engine provides a real physics system. Yes, the game play hasn't really changed fundamentally but this particular implementation is superb.

Happily, there are tons of cheats. I don't have the patience to slog my way up levels so I took the shortcut route to raising gold, attributes and skills. I'm still at a low level but I'm well kitted out and for me, it's more fun.

Recommended.
